What is Self-Healing?

As long as you’ve been alive, you’ve been witnessing your body’s ability to heal itself. When you get a scrape or a bruise, you can rely on the chemistry within you to heal those ailments and restore you to new.

Ancient Eastern medicine recognizes the powerful healing energy we have within our bodies and applies that same knowledge to healing the mind as well.

Self-healing, in a nutshell, refers to the process of using mental and physical tools that already exist within you to find inner peace and rewire the way you think and perceive the world around you. When you can identify sources of energy that lead to feelings like anger, sadness, anxiety, and fear, you can actively work to heal the parts of your mind that holds on to those emotions. You can even change the way that these emotions manifest within your body.

The process of self-healing is entirely motivated by the person doing the healing. It relies on your own motivation, discipline, and desire to heal yourself from within, without the influence of external factors.

Self-healing isn’t to be confused with self-care. Self-healing is not face masks and bubble baths. It’s challenging and messy work that forces you to question who you are as an individual and observe yourself in ways that will make you very uncomfortable. It goes way beyond surface level care and healing and challenges your ego, your thoughts and patterns, and forces you to confront aspects of your personality that you want to change.

Why Self-Healing?

The value of self-healing lies in its ability to be uniquely tailored to each individual. It requires you to look deep within yourself, question yourself, and get to know yourself on a level that you may have overlooked before.

Of course, there are always going to be instances where you need additional guidance and help from people like doctors, mental health professionals, and coaches. But if you adopt a self-healing practice, you can get exponentially more benefits from any other type of healing your doing.

When I began my self-healing journey, I was terrified. I knew that there were parts of my personality that I was holding on to that were holding me back. I didn’t like who I was, and I wasn’t sure if I would ever be able to change.

Through diving into various activities that I considered to be very “woo-woo” and outside of my comfort zone, did I find a community of people that were on the same mission as myself. I was able to piece together different activities that I could incorporate into my day today. These activities seemed small at the time, but the culmination of doing them regularly, as well as educating myself on lesser-known healing techniques, helped me work through some of the hardest times of my life.

On the next page, you’ll find a list of resources that I’ve compiled over the last five years. Some of these resources were created by people that I consider to be mentors from afar. The work that they’ve done has drastically influenced my life.
